UPS employee Jason Ellis, 47, and his wife Shauna, 43, who have been married for 14 years and share two teenage children in Fort Washington, Maryland, now share something more ominous: a cancer diagnosis.
In May 2021, Shauna was diagnosed with breast cancer and later went through a double mastectomy and multiple reconstruction surgeries in the past year, according to her husband.
While his wife was recovering from the second surgery, Jason Ellis said that he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer after a scheduled colonoscopy in February, just days after she completed her last procedure.
“On (Wednesday) March 9, I had surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC to remove a mass, but the doctor was unable to remove all the cancer from my colon," Jason Ellis detailed on a GoFundMe that was set up to help offset their ongoing medical bills.
Jason Ellis began chemotherapy on Tuesday, April 19, though he has been unable to work since March due to his health concerns, causing additional complications for their family as he is "the primary provider in (their) home."
“It has become a financial burden at this point which could potentially cause a foreclosure on my home,” Ellis explained. “My savings (have) been depleted causing a major hardship in my family.
"We ask moving forward that you keep our family in your prayers and if it is in your heart to donate, it’s greatly appreciated.”
As of Wednesday, July 20, the GoFundMe has exceeded its $15,000 goal, with $17,205 being donated from more than 300 individuals.
